Pho Ketkeo Reviews (0)

Pho Ketkeo has firmly established itself as my go-to spot in New Haven for the best Pho and more. With its cozy and inviting (mom-and-pop style) ambiance, I've been coming to Pho Ketko since 2019. The standout star of the menu is undoubtedly their Pho. Each bowl is a fair balance of flavors, with a rich and aromatic broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and generous portions of tender meats. The broth's balance of spices and herbs is just right, providing a comforting and satisfying experience with every spoonful. It's the perfect hangover meal. 5/5. Their veggie spring rolls are a unique take on a classic, offering a fresh and flavorful start to the meal. Small portions, but still great. 4.5/5. For a heartier option, the drunken noodles stand out with their perfect blend of spices and generous portions, ensuring you'll have enough for a second meal. 5/5. The Thai dishes, like the coconut soup with shrimp, chicken, or pork, feel somewhat authentic and are also great options! 4/5. Service at Pho Ketkeo is exceptional. The staff is genuinely friendly and attentive, enhancing the dining experience with excellent service. The restaurant also offers a BYOB option, allowing you to pair your favorite beer or wine with their delicious offerings.

Great food and good prices, the drunken noodles were little spicier than usual, everything else was standard quality, service was friendly and fast, the space was spacious and clean, great asian food choice in the area

Solid Thai + Laotian restaurant in downtown New Haven. Like other reviews mentioned, the pho is not a Vietnamese-style pho - it's more Lao-style (slightly different flavor profile and a bit sweeter). The pho is reasonably priced and the portion sizes are huge! My partner and I usually share a medium, which is enough for both of us. One of my favorite starters on the menu is the nam khao. The rice is crispy, tangy, savory, spicy...so flavorful! It can get heavy especially if you're not sharing the dish with others, so wrap it in the lettuce leaves to keep it refreshing. The servers are very friendly but seem newer/inexperienced - there were a few times where the wrong order was brought to our table, the servers had to confirm our orders before placing the dish down at our table, and they forgot which pho we had ordered.

I don't know why I hadn't been here?! We walked by it all the time as we usually park in a garage nearby. Today we felt like pho and decided to give it a try. Pho was flavorful and the small portion is a big small. The appetizers were good. My favorite were the spring rolls. Definitely adding this to the rotation for the upcoming winter season.

This hidden gem has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering an authentic taste of Laos with a modern twist. The Authentic Experience at Pho Ketkeo
Pho Ketkeo is more than just a restaurant; it’s an immersive journey into the heart of Laotian cuisine. When you step into the restaurant, the warm and inviting ambiance immediately sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. The menu is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Laos, with each dish prepared using traditional recipes passed down through generations. Whether you’re new to Laotian food or a seasoned enthusiast, Pho Ketkeo offers an authentic experience that resonates with both your taste buds and your soul.
One of the standout dishes at Pho Ketkeo is the Laotian pho, a flavorful noodle soup that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Laotian cooking. Unlike its Vietnamese counterpart, Laotian pho is known for its bold, spicy flavors and the use of herbs that give it a distinct, aromatic profile. The broth is simmered for hours, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully, creating a soup that is both comforting and invigorating.
Another dish that showcases the authenticity of Pho Ketkeo is the Larb, a traditional Laotian salad made with minced meat, herbs, and spices. It’s a dish that’s both refreshing and flavorful, with a perfect balance of heat, acidity, and savory notes. The chefs at Pho Ketkeo take great pride in ensuring that every dish stays true to its roots while also appealing to the modern palate.
Crafting Culinary Art with Salient Ingredients
At Pho Ketkeo, the attention to detail is evident in the careful selection of ingredients. The restaurant sources the finest herbs, spices, and fresh produce, ensuring that every dish bursts with flavor. Freshness is a cornerstone of Laotian cuisine, and it’s something that Pho Ketkeo doesn’t compromise on. From the vibrant lemongrass used in their soups to the aromatic kaffir lime leaves that elevate their curries, each ingredient is chosen for its ability to enhance the overall dish.
A must-try is the Mok Pa, a steamed fish dish that is marinated with a blend of herbs and spices, wrapped in banana leaves, and then steamed to perfection. The result is a dish that’s not only delicious but also visually appealing. The fish is tender, and the flavors are deeply infused, making every bite a delightful experience.
The restaurant also offers a variety of noodle dishes that highlight the versatility of Laotian cooking. Whether it’s the spicy Khao Poon, a coconut-based noodle soup, or the savory Khao Soi, each dish is a testament to the intricate balance of flavors that Laotian cuisine is known for.
Close Entities and the Harmonious Flavors
Pho Ketkeo is a place where flavors come together in harmony, creating a symphony of taste that lingers long after the meal is over. The restaurant’s commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of their service, from the welcoming atmosphere to the carefully curated menu. Service at Pho Ketkeo is attentive and friendly, making every guest feel like part of the family.
One of the unique aspects of Laotian cuisine is its ability to balance contrasting flavors, and this is something that Pho Ketkeo excels at. The use of bitter and sour flavors, often through ingredients like tamarind and lime, is a hallmark of Laotian cooking. These flavors are balanced with the richness of coconut milk or the umami of fish sauce, creating dishes that are both complex and satisfying.
The Nam Khao, a crispy rice salad, is a perfect example of this balance. The crunch of the rice, combined with the tangy lime and the savory notes of pork, makes for a dish that’s both texturally and flavorfully exciting. It’s a dish that captures the essence of Laotian food – simple yet sophisticated, with a deep respect for the ingredients.
The Importance of Tradition and Innovation
While Pho Ketkeo is deeply rooted in tradition, the restaurant is not afraid to innovate. The chefs here take traditional recipes and give them a modern twist, creating dishes that are both familiar and new. This approach has made Pho Ketkeo a favorite among food enthusiasts who appreciate both the authenticity and the creativity of the cuisine.
One such innovation is their fusion dishes, where Laotian flavors are combined with other culinary traditions. The Laotian tacos, for example, are a delightful fusion of Laotian and Mexican cuisines, with the bold flavors of Laotian spices wrapped in a soft taco shell. It’s a dish that perfectly encapsulates the restaurant’s philosophy – honoring tradition while embracing new ideas.
The restaurant also offers a selection of vegetarian and vegan options, catering to the diverse dietary preferences of its customers. These dishes are crafted with the same care and attention to detail as the rest of the menu, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the rich flavors of Laotian cuisine.
Pho Ketkeo is not just a place to eat; it’s a place to experience the rich tapestry of Laotian culture through its food. The restaurant’s dedication to quality, authenticity, and innovation has made it a standout in New Haven’s culinary scene, and it’s a place that continues to delight and surprise its patrons with every visit. Whether you’re a local looking for your next favorite spot or a visitor eager to explore new flavors, Pho Ketkeo offers an experience that is both unforgettable and distinctly Laotian.
Very cozy Asian restaurant with a friendly waitress. We all enjoyed our lunches.. my drunken noodles were just spicy enough although the pork was a bit tough. My husband's bowl of pho was so big he couldn't finish. Both my friends who travelled to meet us from New York commented on the generous portions and very reasonable prices.
